A Slower Season, A Faithful Flock

It’s been a hectic season around here, and I can definitely feel it. Life has been full, schedules have been packed, and some of my favorite rhythms—like regular sourdough baking—have taken a bit of a back seat. While I haven’t been baking bread lately, I did stumble across a sourdough fresh-milled flour chocolate chip cookie recipe that has quickly become a household favorite. Sometimes a good cookie is just what everyone needs.

Even in the midst of the busyness, the chickens continue to be a steady, comforting presence. They’re doing well overall, though they’ve started to slow down on egg production now that winter has settled in. We do have a light in the coop to help extend daylight hours, but despite that, fewer eggs are just part of the season. Thankfully, the cold air itself doesn’t seem to bother them much.

Mike and I spent time winterizing both the coop and the run, doing our best to keep things comfortable and safe. We put up plastic sheeting on three sides of the run to block the wind and added weatherstripping to every little crevice in the coop. Managing temperature and humidity has been a bit tricky—probably the trickiest part of winter chicken keeping—but they seem to be flourishing despite it all.

One of my favorite parts of the day is simply watching them. The girls know exactly when I come outside, and before I even make it across the yard, they’re following me around, hopeful and expectant. They trail behind me to the back of the coop for their treats, then sprint toward the door, eager to get inside for their beloved black soldier fly larvae. It never fails to make me smile.

As school wraps up, I’m really looking forward to some much-needed downtime—time to rest, reset, and maybe even get back to baking sourdough regularly. Until then, I’m grateful for the slower pace winter brings, the simple joy of caring for our flock, and the faithful little reminders to pause and enjoy the moment.
